The Story
The brief from Vogue's fashion director, Ng Yi Han, arrived in May. The editorial would anchor the AW23 issue, themed around what she called "the quiet room" — a meditation on slow living, considered objects, and the kind of luxury that doesn't announce itself. She wanted the photographs to feel like they had been taken in a year that wasn't quite 2023.
We spent six weeks pre-producing. The location went through four iterations before we settled on a 1930s-era greenhouse at the edge of a tea estate in the Cameron Highlands. The light there is consistently overcast, the air consistently cool, and the glass diffuses everything just enough that it felt like working inside a softbox the size of a barn.
"Twelve looks in fifteen hours. No softboxes, no scrim. Just window light, careful planning, and one very patient model."
Each of the twelve looks took about an hour: a setup, three to five frames, a costume change, a small reset. We worked entirely on a Hasselblad with a single 80mm lens. The on-set monitor was turned away from the team after the second look — we wanted everyone to commit, including us. The cover candidate emerged on day two at around 4pm: a profile shot, the model looking out of the greenhouse glass, a single fern in soft focus.
The September issue went to print three weeks later. The editorial closed with a small detail credit at the back of the magazine — "Photographed by Dusk Studio" — which is, in fact, all we ever ask for.
We had four photographers shortlisted for this issue. Dusk Studio was the only team whose test shots felt like a finished editorial. The final work exceeded even the test.Ng Yi HanFashion Director, Vogue Singapore
