The Story
The Marigold is a 28-room hotel in a 1907 shophouse compound on Lebuh Acheh in Penang. It had spent eight years building a quiet reputation among slow travellers, but its brand imagery — heavy on saturated overhead shots of food, light on people — had begun to feel out of step with the actual experience of staying there.
Adeline, the new marketing director, came to us with a directive from the founder: "Show what it feels like to stay here, not what the rooms look like." This sounded simple but represented a complete inversion of how hospitality imagery normally gets made. No staged check-ins. No models posing in robes. No flatlays of breakfast.
"We needed campaign imagery that didn't feel like a campaign. Dusk Studio delivered exactly that."
We spent five days at the hotel, photographing staff as they worked, capturing the building as the light moved across it through the day, and following two pairs of real guests (with consent, with releases) as they wandered the compound. The strongest images came from quiet moments — the housekeeper folding sheets in the third-floor hallway, the breakfast cook lifting steamer trays, a guest reading on the front terrace at 7am.
The campaign launched in October 2023 and ran across the brand's website, a 32-page print booklet, and three OOH locations in KL. The hotel's organic Instagram engagement rose 184% over the following quarter. Adeline credits the photography for changing not just how the brand is perceived, but how the team thinks about the experience itself.
We needed campaign imagery that didn't feel like a campaign. Dusk Studio delivered exactly that — a series of quiet, considered photographs that became the spine of our brand relaunch. Engagement on our key channels is up 184% in the quarter since launch.Adeline NgMarketing Director · The Marigold Hotel
